Leading horses to water?
One of my favorite expressions is “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.”
There are many, many people in this world who waste a lot of time and effort trying to make horses drink. They try to convince others that they are right. They try to “save” people who have different beliefs, politics, or social structures. They sometimes become so convinced that the horses need to drink that they try to beat the poor horse into submission. Understandably, the horse doesn’t like this sort of treatment. Have you ever given unwanted advice to someone? Or interfered in someone’s life on their behalf? Those horses might look thirsty, but only the horse itself can truly know what it needs.
I think we can all agree that trying to make a horse drink is a waste of time and energy, and doesn’t honor the horse. But what about leading it to water? Again, I think we’re not trusting in the inner wisdom of the horse. If it were thirsty, it would come to the water all by itself. We don’t need to lecture, to evangelize, or to get on a soap box. We don’t need to cajole, throw subtle hints, or hand out our favorite books on spirituality and self-help as Christmas presents. Horses don’t like this sort of treatment too much, either.
No, as Lightworkers I think we can only do one of two things. We can openly let it be known - not in an obnoxious, used-car-salesman kind of way, but in an accepting, non-judgmental way - that we have some pretty nice water over here. We like it. If it looks good to the horse, it can come over and try some. If not, then that horse is obviously not thirsty, or is interested in a different kind of water. That’s okay. No need to convince the horse that our water is better. It will find its own perfect water in its own perfect time.
What’s the other thing we can do as Lightworkers? We can show the horse the Source of the water. We can take ourselves entirely out of the equation. Does this water look good to you? Here’s where to get it. You don’t need me. I have a few tools that have worked for me to get to this water. Use them, don’t use them. But get your water yourself.
I’m fully aware that I have now beaten this analogy to death. But it sure is a good saying!
Blessings,
Andrea
