Are they really wrong ?
Have you ever wondered why two people can be in the same place at the same time and yet have very different ideas about what was said or happened ?
Maybe this may help.
A little while ago my youngest Daughter (12) phoned me all distrought. She had been arguing with her best friend and they were never going to talk to each other again. I asked for understanding and suddenly knew what to say,to help my little girl. It was along these lines.
Dad. What was the arguement about?
CJ. I don't know.
Dad. You argued for 2 hours but you don't know what it was about?
CJ. Well she was wrong.
Dad. About what?
CJ. She just was.
Dad. So if you see something is green and she says it is blue, is she wrong?
CJ. Of course.
Dad. What if she is colour blind and has never seen yellow? What colour would she see green as?
CJ. Ummm blue I guess.
Dad So is she wrong when she says its blue?
CJ. Hmm tricky, I guess she says it as she is seeing it and it just looks different to her.
We worked through some other examples and discussed it for maybe an hour.
The lesson was for both of us, as it was all new for me too.
We all interprete everything we see, hear, and feel through the filters of our life experiences. As we all have different life experiences it is only natural that our interpretations will be different. Some life experiences are shared, and the more shared experiences we have with someone, the closer our interpretations are likley to be.
So don't instantly assume that the other person is wrong in a given situation. They May just have different filters to yours.
It is a good lesson for all relationships.
