Will the whole population be ascending or a select few?

Hope someone can help me out here, I'm new to the whole concept and just learning in baby steps.

I've been told only a select few are going to ascend and not the whole world. I'm interested in hearing people's opinions on this and the whole ascending concept explained.
I read that earth will become a proton star etc and then well what happens to people as we knowit. Do we save people or help them as in bible terms go out and make discples of a ll nations.

Where do we ascend too? into the heavens or a new earth. I'm a little puzzled by it all as I've been drawn to all of this by the help of angels. Not sure if I'm meant to ask at this stage but I'm just puzzled by the whole concept and need someone to summarize in honest terms what's happening?
