Strange day at the zoo today!
Well I haven't been to a zoo for years and years so when it was mentioned last week I jumped at the chance. I have a particular fondness for giraffes as well as gorillas, chimps and orangutans. I also love elephants and penguins! :-)
Anyway, arrived at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, one of the good zoos (supposedly) that look after their animals and do a lot of conservation work, and are involved with 'reintroducing into the wild' activity, but I was amazed at what I felt and noticed!
Some of the wild cats were doing the wandering up and down thing which is supposed to be a sign of boredom and mental trauma, and other animals looked so sad I could really feel it inside, especially the rhinos. The elphants were a blessing though, I'm sure I could see happiness in there and the gorilla enclosure (called the Gorilla Palace as it's huge, and I mean huge) was absolutely amazing!
Even though they weren't taking much notice of me, one of the adult females was interacting with a young couple near me - tapping on the glass (the gorilla was), running away then running back towards the couple throwing loads of straw at the glass. Putting their hands up to the glass against each others, so good to watch!
So even though I'm not sure I agree with all that zoos have to offer, it was an interesting day! Just wanted to share it with you!
PS only saw a few giraffes from a distance in the end while on a minibus thingy, but still quite good!
