Parable of the Underground Stream

There was once a man who lived at a time of a widespread drought, and he along with his kind, thirsted for satisfaction from the sky... but it didn't come, and the earth around him was becoming barren and dry. But the man held a belief, a strong belief that rose from deep down inside of him... he believed that there was a huge expansive underground stream that existed, and its waters were abundant and pure with Life for all. It had to exist, because we fill a connection to it, and we are filled with Water, aren't we! The man pointed out to himself. So he went out in search of it, and he came to a spot in the land that he felt, way beneath the earth, the water must flow. So he put his spade to the ground, and began to dig.

And he dug... and he dug. The sweat poured from his brow as he grounded into heavier soil, getting deeper and deeper. Suddenly he heard a voice from the top of the hole he had made.

"Why are you digging like a madman? Don't you know that there is water, just on the other side of the valley!" He voice said, laughing heartily.

The man stopped for a moment, panting, leaning upon the spade that bore his work. He began to listen intently. His muscles were aching him so, and his lips were cracking in the blistering heat the drought provided. Finally he gave in. So he followed this voice, climbed out, and in an instant had filled in the hole with all the earth he had flung out, all his hard work... gone.

He followed the voice, and, indeed, there it was, although not much remained... Water! He rushed down to it, and filled his hands and his mouth with joy... but it was short-lived. In horror he spat it out, as the polluted disgust of dirt and oily residue clung to the droplets of purity. It was vile, and it would kill him if he drank it. After all that, it was a false promise.

He left the voice of the man he had followed to his polluted wasteland, and dejectedly walked back to the site of his hole. The remorse was great, but this was quickly turning to heart-felt vigour. With new strength he picked up the spade, and again re-dug the hole he had started, and he pressed on relentlessly.

His strong digging started to attract a crowd, who laughed his efforts away.

"Why are you digging so? There is no water down there! Look, the earth is getting no wetter! If we could find moisture from dry rock, don't you think that we too would be down there, searching for that magical water of pure sparkling taste!"

The man didn't know what to think. He was starting to doubt. He had gone much further than last time, and indeed, the earth was as dry and barren as the land above him. Sorrow began to creep in. Was he really being a fool? Did he really think this magical stream existed in this dry and barren land?

"That water you seek is fanciful. Nothing like that can exist benath the earth's surface were volcanoes spur and the earth shakes. Come. Come up and drink with us, for we have the water that you need."

Again they persuaded him up and out, to the edge of his hole. He stood, looking back down at the chasm of his enormouse work below him. He began to laugh, at what he thought was a mistake, a wrong turning. At least know his prayers had been answered, and the water was here! With these people!

They greeted him with a jug, of clear water... and he drank thankfully, almost greedily.

Psst... he spat it out, for the second time in a row. It was saltwater! They had given him seawater! The more he wanted to drink, the more his thirst intensifed, and o did it intensify.

"You can't drink this, it's saltwater, its worse than the polluted river over the valley!"

"Don't be stupid! Doesn't do us any harm, and we are okay! If it's so bad then were is this magic water of yours, then, that's meant to be better than ours. I look around and I see dry rock. You are a fool to dig so deep in a waterless land."

He tried to plead with them, but they brushed him aside, and started to walk off, drinking and drinking from the flasks they cradled, but he could tell by their shunting bodies that they were greatly suffering because of this water that they thought was giving them life. In fact it seemed to be do the exact opposite, and they hadn't even the faintest idea.

He looked back again to his dry hole in the ground. He knew that all he longed for was the pure water. The purest water. He went back to his digging, muscles stalling and going dizzy with thirst. He couldn't go on much longer. He couldn't do it, alone, as he thought he could when he started his endevour.

Finally, he gave in. He knelt down upon the floor, put his head in his hands, and prayed to that Life, that Living Water, to help him. He felt that he had to be helped, he had gone so far, done so much... he couldn't go on much longer.

Suddenly the ground beneath his feet cracked, and tumbled away... going down, falling with speed. Suddenly he was engulfed by a tremendous splash as the huge stream gently broke his fall... the Stream! He had found it! he started laughing, crying. He bent down and drank from the water, bathed in the water, sang and danced in the water.

After awhile, as his ecstasy turned back into pleasant joy, his thoughts descended upon those who he had left behind. Those who still suffered greatly. He turned around him, and saw a large jug. He took it, smiling, and filled it with the pure water of the stream, and found a ladder on the side, and started to get back to the hole, to climb out.

He did so, joyously, calling to those who were mingling around the hole after they looked down, frighteningly, wondering if he had died at the bottom of the chasm!

They starred in amazement at the water dripping from him, and the glow of LIFE in his skin. They held out their cupped hands and thankfully drank out of the water that was poured out for them, and they to began to rejoice for they to were tasing a little of that pure ecstaic vibrant water.
