Hopi and Sioux Prophecies
For many centuries the Hopi have lived on a desert mesa in Arizona. Their ancestors chose to settle in this place because they knew that it would keep their people close to the creator. There is a story among the Hopi that speaks of them emerging into this place from an underground world where their people lived until it was safe to return once again to the upper world. Here they practice the ancient and sacred rituals of their ancestors.
In 1948, a group of Hopi elders came forward to warn the world of the events that the Hopi prophecy foretold. Their prophecies themselves instructed them to go to the United Nations building. They called this the House of Mica. During the course of the next forty-four years and repeated attempts, the Hopi were unsuccessful in having their voices heard at the UN. But, in 1992 they were finally permitted to address the General Assembly. This led to another gathering at the UN in 1993 called the “Cry of the Earth Conference.” when leaders from seven nations spoke of their prophecies.
The Hopi prophecy predicts the return of Pahana, known as their True White Brother. They say when he left them in ancient times he promised to return. The Hopi wear their hair in bangs to form a window, through which they say they can see their Elder Brother when He returns. This will also serve as a mark by which they will be recognized by Him.
Before you follow the link to the prophecy, it is important to remember that the Hopi believe that they are the original people to inhabit this world, which they call the fourth dimension. When they first arrived at Oraibj in the beginning of time there was a prophecy etched in stone. It is still there, called Prophecy Rock.
Black Elk and Crazy Horse were the leaders of the Lakota Sioux in the late 1800’s. Each of them had a vision of the future. Black Elk saw that his people would be plagued by famine, sickness and war. They would eventually lose heart, and the sacred hoop of his nation would be broken. But, he also saw a vision of his nation being reunited after seven generations had passed at which time it would become a part of the greater hoop of all the nations of the earth. Then, he saw the daybreak star rising in the east, and a voice spoke to him. It said: “It shall be a relative to them, and who shall see it shall see much more, for from there comes Wisdom; and those who do not see it shall be dark.” Black Elk interpreted this as a great Prophet from the East who would bring a message to his people.
The vision of Crazy Horse foretold the darkness that would descend on his people. He saw the coming of the automobile, airplanes, and the world wars yet to come. He saw his people gradually awakened after the last war when they would begin to dance again under the Sacred Tree. Dancing with his people were people from all races who had become brothers. He foresaw that the world would be made whole again when all the people of the world started to work together as one.
Among the Lakota, the Crow, the Chippewa, and other Native American tribes the White Buffalo is the most sacred of symbols. It represents purity, sacrifice and also is a sign that prophecy is being fulfilled. White Buffalo Calf woman is honored and respected by the Lakota Sioux as the one who brought them the Sacred Pipe, and established their society. When she left, she turned into a white buffalo, and promised to return someday. In 1994 a white buffalo calf was born in Wisconsin, in 1996 another was born in South Dakota, and on August 25, 2006 another was born on the same farm as the first in Wisconsin. For the native people these births have been a sign to “mend the hoop” of nations, to establish brotherhood within the human family, and return to a more spiritual way of life.
