Life for rent
Cadence searched for a sweater in the clothes isle of the Good Will. “God, please let it be 5.99 or lower.” She whispered holding her crystal necklace in her palm. Centering herself she became more determined. Her eyes came open…yet, nothing there but old 90’s clothes and Hooters tank tops. Nothing special was for her. Yet she taught to keep her hopes from reaching high ground. She just snapped her fingers, “Dang it,” She said looking away before another look would make her sulk.
New York was cold this time of year and she wished for 3 three things. A can of cat food for her street ally friend, a sweater, and a breakfast croissant. This year had been hard. A divorce of her husband, her still borne girl, and fire of a newly purchased house. Now she was on the street.
She looked down. And a light blue cashmere sweater laid there, on the rack. Cadence gasped. “Oh wow, thank you God!” She quickly took it off the rack and held it to her cheeks and spun around. But looked with hesitation at the price tag. The price stood there on the tag. For once not a insult to her, 5.99 It read. She bought it and walked out of the store fairly warm and trendy looking. She went ahead picked up a newspaper, and a can of cat food.
Down back down the ally and to the creaky fire escape she sat opened the can of Friskies. While she waited for Felix, she read the paper. Suddenly came up vying
for affection. “Hey ratty old boy, how’s it hanging.” She cooed. Scratching behind his ears. “Meow” he sounded out nonchalantly, and darted for the food. She unfolded the newspaper it read: 5 million American Women have died from Heart Disease.
“ You know why women die of heart diseases Felix?” Cadence said. “It’s cause they die of broken hearts.”
The clock tower rung at 9:00 pm. “Well gotta go to work Felix, seeya later.”
Waiting for regulars, and hoping none of them were police. Every night 6 days a week her life was for rent. For a few hours men could play her however they pleased for hours on end. But in the end, she never expected to make attachments. Walking down the cold dark ally was not a unfamiliar thing.
She had bruises from her last pay check. A large rich man and a little do dependant on his mother. He requested sick things and when she refused to act like a mother. She had a beating. But it was all behind her and the only thing now was worries it will ruin her looks to men.
Eric was a new man in town. Tall, tousled hair, stressed jeans and a leather jacket. He was in for a photo shoot and was staying and the Grand Hotel in New York. Driving around he made a sudden turn down Heatherson Avenue. Cadence turned and scoped the parking lot. Across from it, there was a high profile car. A squint of the eyes told her a Lexus. Eric looked feeling there was something watching him. At the moment they had caught each others eyes the magnetism pulled so abruptly they lost all there senses.
She stood there under the orange glow of the light. Frozen under his spellbinding presence. He drove his car closer. “Hi there, I’m new to this place. Want to show me around. Are you a performer?” he said looking fishnet stalking. Immediate she was not sure of this stunningly handsome man. She couldn’t move but know she had too. “Um yeah sure.” And she got in the car.
After mutual conversation driving around the city with bright lights reflecting off there irises. “Oh Lowie’s breakfast shack, I used to love this as a kid. Come on lets grab something to eat.” he said opening her door and asking for her hand. Cadence never knew of such manners since the early days of her ex-husband. “Alright” she said with a enthusiastic smile. At the “World Famous” breakfast shack everything was over priced. They looked at the menu. The smell of breakfast croissants wafted threw the air. “Mmmm smells good. You want one?” he said wrapping arm around her waist. Cadence thought he was one of the men to take it slow. With subtle movements. But in actuality a woman and her kid had to move threw. A smile spread across her face. And warmness grew in her heart. Close to him smelling his cologne. “You want children some day?” he smiled with crinkles in the corners of his eyes.
After a much anticipated croissants and pancakes, they were engaged deep conversation. What does this guy want? Cadence thought. When are we going to get this over with?. “So after my tonsil’s were removed, I fattened up on ice cream. Boy, was that a fun week. I think I tasted all of Baskin’s 32 flavors that summer.” he smiled.
And she truly did laugh. Deep and from the belly. Something she had not experienced for a good long while.
I hope my regular costumers don’t find me here. The voice echoed in her head.
The car was a luxurious place for her. Soft and warm made her feel secure and Eric’s presence assured that. “Grand hotel is where I’m staying. Camon Let me take you back there. Do you have to be anywhere tonight?” “No, sure I’d never been to Grand Hotel.” “Yeah. The photo shoots are crazy there I heard. Really intense. They take place right in the own basement too.” “I bet it’s beautiful, I always saw the big crystal chandeliers and golden everything. Ahh what a dream.”
What I’m saying. Dreams are not for sharing to customers. What is it with the princess talk. Ok don’t get your hopes up. Cadence shuffled in her seat. “Ya, know Cadence. I think we have a lot in common.” he said smiling and melting her heart again. “We do?” she said bluntly, as he stepped out from the car and opened her door. He still was smiling. “Oh yes, we do, don’t we.” He squeezed her shoulders and put his forehead to hers. “Why of course we do.” “Now, lets go inside.” he said taking her hand.
In a flash they went threw the hotel looking and savoring the artwork and music rooms. To the Grand pool and then the Beaux theater. Then came the master suite. Cadence never thought their could be Jacuzzi’s in a hotel room and a miniature kitchen and wide screen television. “Oh my god. Its more grand than I thought.” Cadence giggled.
She turned around and Eric had a bottle of champagne. “Lets celebrate, to me. For a new city and for you a beautiful new girl I have met. Shall we?” he handed her a glass of Dom Perignon.
“Bubbly, tickles my nose even.” “Yes and nothing can’t be complete without music Beethoven once said,” he said turning up the speakers from the arm war. Cadence smiled “I don’t think he said that now!” she laughed. “Well for tonight lets just say, he did.” The music was calm as they danced in each others arms laughing. The wine bottle grew more and more depleted.
It was not long still clothes flew off. But this time it was Cadence who got to decide when and what she wanted to. Alcohol in the veins were flowing in tune, music and gotten louder. Things had a faster spin. And after a long night they had fell asleep staying warm huddled together.
In the morning she woke like a princess wrapped in gold sheets and Egyptian cotton. After a rubbing of the eyes and walk around the hotel Eric was no where to be found. She then remembered the photo shoot. Ill just wait for him. We’ll go out for the breakfast shack again. That’ll be nice.
A flip on the television, caught her attention while she got dressed. The newscaster had a serious look on his face. “Model Eric Xavier Halex had been shot 3 three times in the lungs, abdomen and back. He was rushed to the hospital after a 19 year old girl called 911. Sadly, aspiring model Eric Halex did not make it. And died at the hospital at 8:16am. There has been contact made with family members and accord of a message he kept muttering.” Cadence screamed, and cried till tears could flow no more. Never has she been so distraught. Paper flew, lamps were broken and dishes were smashed in her rage.
“Noooooooooo, why god why. Why god why!” she kept on saying and till it slowly grew to silence.
The newscaster had appeared again. “Getting back to the murder of Eric….”
Everything faded, when she saw a envelope with her name written elegantly on it.
She picked it up slowly without a breath. Opened it slowly.
Dear Cadence
You truly are a wonderful person. I never had such wonderful experience with such a entity. You are a rose bud in a world full of posies. Encounters are to be cherished, so I hope this one will be for a long while.
~ Love Eric
“The message seems to be of ‘Kay-fence’ he seemed to be saying yet it has not been deciphered or have any, known relevance.”
“Cadence,” she whispered.
She knew she did not have much time before the police were going to come for investigation. She combed her hair and toke a quick shower.
That night was like any other night as she learned never to look back.
She had more customers than usual, around 9:30pm this time. And put on her sweater before night rolled in chilling her to the point of sickness. Felix the cat slinked by her side.
Walking down the cold dark ally was not a unfamiliar thing.
