Prescription For Peace

If you are prone to anxiety and stressful thoughts these days, perhaps high on your list is a desire for a quiet mind or inner peace. Inner peace is the opposite of anxious thoughts and fears. Yet, how can we have inner peace in this world of danger? News of natural and man-made disasters trigger our most basic fears. We fear death, pain and separation from those we love. Fear is a crippling emotion that we all face. The teachings of A Course in Miracles and Attitudinal Healing offer some helpful guidance..

Limit your thoughts to the present. Usually the present moment is safe. It is also the only moment we can take action. Reviewing unpleasant or painful past events may result in feelings of regret, resentment or guilt. Projecting concerns and worries into the future can result in anxiety and fear..

Focus on life from a spiritual perspective looking beyond appearances. By looking at the bigger picture we no longer see the world as consisting of meaningless or isolated events. You may want to cultivate the belief that all things are working together for good even though we may not understand why certain things happen. This is where faith in a Higher Power is helpful. Good can result from even the most tragic occurrences. During crisis people become closer. They join together to offer help and extend kindness and love. In times of trouble, we often become aware of what is most important in life..

Our destiny is always secure, since in reality, there is no death. The body dies but the essence of love and spirituality, which is our true reality, is secure. Love is eternal, changeless, timeless and without form. A mother grief-stricken by the loss of her two children during the Oklahoma bombing said that she knew her children had gone on to a better place. This belief gave her some solace. Susan Trout, author of To See Differently, says “One must fully accept the reality of his love essence in order for the fear of death to melt away. This is the love that is eternal and that passes from this reality into the next. This is the love that shines away the fear. To accept the reality of the presence of this love is the true task"..

Inner peace is an inside job. We need to be willing to view life in a way that empowers us rather than disempowers us. From a peaceful mind, we form a peaceful perception of the world. Good questions to ask of ourselves are: What is upsetting me? Why am I holding on to this feeling? What do I really want? How could I look at this differently to have peace of mind? Feelings result from thoughts. By changing the way we perceive the situation, we create new feelings..

The world at times seems so insane. The cruel acts of some individuals illustrate the horrendous results brought on by feelings of separation and the lack of love and respect for our brothers and sisters. Blame and attack does not create a peaceful world. The vast majority of people must join together to change a belief system that isn’t working. The place to begin is with ourselves. We need to accept responsibility for our own thoughts. In each moment we can choose peace instead of conflict, love rather than fear. We can give up attack thoughts because they do not give us peace of mind. We must, with the help of the Holy Spirit, practice forgiveness which A Course in Miracles says is our single function and the way to achieve our goal of peace of mind. Gerald Jampolsky, founder of Attitudinal Healing, reminds us: “If we remember that it is our thoughts that make up the world, then we can change them. We change the world we see by changing our thoughts about it. By changing our thoughts, we are actually changing the cause. Then the world we see, the effect, will change automatically"..

Our thoughts can cause us turmoil or peace. We have the freedom to choose the contents of our minds. The peace song reminds us “let their be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” As we choose loving thoughts, we let go of fear and experience inner peace. According to the concept of the Hundreth Monkey, when enough of the species join together and begin practicing a new behavior or a new way of being, a change can occur in the whole species. In the book Personal Power Through Awareness, Sanaya Roman (Orin) writes: “Every thought you send out creates events in the universe and attracts people to you. Even more than that, every thought you send out is creating the transformation of the planet. You may not feel that one person can have that much effect on the overall energy of the planet and yet one high, healing thought can cancel out 10,000 or more negative ones. The higher the healing thought, the more lower ones that get canceled. It is not just yourself you are helping when you evolve your thoughts, but everyone around you. You do not even have to know them personally or be physically around them... Healing, positive thoughts go out into your neighborhood and your community and help everyone who is reaching upward"!
