Why Astrology... and what system should we use!?

I have recently come to the conclusion that there is little we can conclude from astrology. This ancient form of life prediction has been with us for as long as man has been able to discern and understand the celestial bodies. But, this throws up the huge question... how much can we trust those 8 or 9 planets in our solar system, (depending on who you talk to), with our life-path and destiny. Why would they throw any influence or life-bearing on our lives?

I would very much like to start a discussion here to talk about the nature of astrology and its impact on people's lives. Here are the questions I would like to pose, and your feedback would be most valued and respected.

Why would souls choose the position of planets as the pre-cursors for reincarnation? Would they not just see what social, domestic and cultrual conditions are ripe without looking to see what planet is in what house at what time?

Why is astrology only limited to planets for influences... why not comets, or other star systems... or the circulation of billions of billions of stars, not to mention galaxies? Do they not have an impact on our lives as does the butterfly who bats her wings and causes a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean?

How can planets of gas, ice, and rock, impact our thoughts and feelings every day... even our life path and destiny?

Also, which of all the many astrological systems is the 'right' one, which one should mankind be using? Mayan, Gregorian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese... etc.... I must say that I am only drawn to the Mayan system where I am a White Rythmic Dog.

I would seriously like to hear your thoughts because my birth chart has strong parrells with my thought patterns and experiences... and it has thrown up many questions I have not, as yet, been able to answer.
