Abundance

Hello;
I have a question. I believe that there is an infinite abundance for us all, our material needs but more importantly, our emotional and spiritual needs. I believe that what we focus on, we create. So if I say I'm broke, I'm going to be broke. If I trust and affirm that I have the money for my bills and food, the money is there.
I have a student asking that if you've achieved goals you've set for yourself, do you have the right to ask for more? I answered of course, it's a new phase of life, make new goals. She is unsure, but I am most certain.
My question is this; what is the reason, besides lessons to learn or choice or focus, that there be such hunger and poverty, not only in third worlds, but in our own communities?
I'm trying to find a way to explain it to her, but my understanding isn't sure on this one.
Anyone care to share?
