~Whiy Not ~
Here are some of my “why not's.”
1. Why not imagine the best of everyone.
2. Why not reach for the stars.
3. Why not overcome doubt and insecurity.
4. Why not feel prosperous and grateful now.
5. Why not say thank you and mean it.
6. Why not tell those you love that you love them.
7. Why not eliminate AIDS.
8. Why not start your own business.
9. Why not value making things and consuming less.
10. Why not value your talent.
11. Why not be more creative.
12. Why not commit to making a real difference.
Why not write out in detail your why not's. The best way to do this is to take a piece of paper and simply write the first thing that comes into your head. In my experience you resist writing out anything to start. This is only lack of confidence. You are not used to asking such a question.
You have a wisdom within you that is waiting to support your WHY NOT. Do you think for a moment that the universal creativity cannot support any of your WHY NOTS.
This is where everyone begins. It begins as a thought in your mind. It is that radical. Once it enters the head and you feel connected to it you engage your heart. Give it some energy and it can become a passion. The world needs you to passionately care.
At the end of the poem
Become passionately full of care. This means you care much. When you care much there is the possibility of hurt. This is why many of us live lukewarm lives. We have been hurt and we have closed down on these hurts. We may not feel passionate but neither do we feel pain.
This is why the journey of The Way of Desiderata is the journey of the hero. It takes tremendous courage to say that you matter and that you will be enough. It takes tremendous courage to enter the herat and follow your WHY NOT. It takes tremendous courage to decide that you will commit to something you care about.
The route of the word care is “to lament.” When you care you open yourself to the possibility of lamenting. This is the nature of love. You are always at risk of getting hurt. What is the alternative? It is that you do not get hurt. You feel things little or not at all. Life is safe but love is missing.
The journey of the hero means that you make the commitment to love. You make a commitment to Return to Love It means you are prepared to leave this Circle of Time and enter what the mystic poet Rumi calls The Circle of Love. It means that you are prepared to risk having your heart broken. You do not go into the journey with the intention of this happening. You begin to know yourself in a way that this is less likely to happen. Yet there are no guarantees. You journey on.
“Why not” as a question is future orientated. It is a question related to possibility. It is related to infinite possibility. If you are going to embrace the word “why” as part of your vocabulary then add “not” to it on a regular basis. Why is a word that is always focused on the past. It is not an unimportant word but it can be vicious circle.
“Why not” is you embracing the possibility of “YES.” You can add to this “WHY NOT ME.”There will be two things that happen. You will get excited and you will become over rational. Stay with the excitement. Ignore the rational. As Elbert Hubbard said “The idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all. You are dangerous. You have been contained to long. You are wild exuberant and exciting.
Desiderata translates as “list of desires.” You can turn your Why Not me questions into a list of desires. This is the purpose of this course. It is to help you realize that the only thing standing in your way is your belief that you are not enough. To return to Love love says
We(this means you)are borne to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others.
WHY NOT start right NOW and give yourself permission to be all that you can be. Why not go now into the Circle of Love that is waiting for you and is always waiting for you. Why not go the Way of Desiderata which is the way of the Return to Love.
Marianne Williamson in the book entitled Return to Love.
