Ashes of the Past

"That being said..."
"At the end of the day..."
"It is what it is..."
"Having said that..."
"For all intents and purposes..."
"Move forward...go ahead..."
"Let it go...just move on..."

Blah-blah words used in boardrooms and Dear Abby
Redundant, ineffectual phrases that waste time
< >
< >
I don't want to let go!
I don't want to move on!
It took so long for the truth to shine
Such a huge chunk of time and
Such a significant fraction of
This gift of life from the Great Spirit
I seem to have mostly squandered.
< >
< >
Can't I get some of it back,
Even just a tiny little bit?
I'll cry, I'll beg and fall
On my knees, prostrating myself
Please, don't make me move on!

It's true what they say
About mind over matter:
The power of the mind is staggering, while
The power of the spirit is incomprehensible.
The hard part is converting mind into matter,
Or, as in my case, into less matter.
< >
< >
"The spirit is willing
But the flesh is weak..."
Though I shall not ever let go
Of the vow I make here and now
< >
< >
I will make sacrifices to the Great Spirit
Burning off fat from my flesh at His altar
Then I will smoke the sacred cedar and sage
And smudge on my forehead ashes of the past
