Espiritus Psykosis

DAN's picture

Dido's "White Flag" is not only one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, it is also currently the theme song for my life as it is right now. So naturally, I had to write a depressing counterpoint to it. Dido's song Vs Dan's poem...and the winner is...Dido!!!

So I laid down my arms
Flew high the white flag
No cease-fire or negotiation
Just total, unconditional surrender
For without my demons
To fight my battles for me
I am far too weak to carry on
Fragile as a hollow Easter eggshell
Dyed a brilliant color to conceal
The dull and barren white beneath
Handle me with care
Lest I crack under pressure
Or be crushed out of spite
My ego, dry withered peach pits
The id bearing scars of wrist slits
Fresh scabs coat a wounded heart
And they are still here, my demons...
Their work done sooner that expected
They have earned their leave
But they've chosen instead
To stay and enjoy the show.
So I guess I'm a ghost now
A thin shadow in your midst
A hulking, hating hell-bound brute
Skulking through the pulsing mist
Insubstantiality incarnate, I
An incorporeal third eye
Doing time on the material plane
A spirit psychotic, a life to feign
Mired in a self-made morass
I am antimatter, negative mass
Seeing the source of darkness in light
Sensing heat from the Sun at night
Don't ever ask or expect me to change
And I'll extend the same courtesy to you
Borne out of the mutual respect that exists
Between the quick and the dead.
