Ready to discover the new dimensions?
What I love about science is that it can help us truly discover the things that both theoriticians and mystics have been saying for quite some time now -- there are other dimensions out there. Parallel dimensions? Gateways to parallel universes? Right now, who knows. But maybe within the next few years we will actually have answers to this.
Check out this article.
And I love this quote from Nima Arkani-Hamed, the 30-something-year-old particles theory physicist featured in the article. You and I may not have the intelligence or skills to 'get' particle physics as easily as him, but this guy just breaks it down to basics for us regarding our own capabilites of understanding and discovery with this:
"He remembers being impressed around age 14 that Newton's laws could enable him to calculate such things as the minimum speed that a space shuttle had to attain to escape the Earth's gravitational field. He'd wondered whether scientists had reached the figure of 11 kilometers per second by trial and error, shooting things in the air until the right speed emerged, until he could calculate it himself.
'When I figured out how to do that for myself, I just thought it was just the coolest thing, that little old me, scratching away on my piece of paper, could figure this out,' he said."
